The Button and Blinds
In offline poker, the dealer button rotates clockwise to determine the order of play. The two players to the left of the button post blinds, which are mandatory bets to start the action. This structure ensures every player participates in each hand. The dealer button is a physical disc that moves around the table. Blinds are posted before any cards are dealt. The rotation ensures fairness and equal opportunity.
Early, Middle, and Late Positions
Positions around the table are categorized as early, middle, or late, based on their order of action. Early positions act first and have less information, while late positions act last and can observe others' decisions. This dynamic is central to poker strategy, but we focus on the physical layout.
- Early positions are the first three seats to the left of the blinds.
- Middle positions are the next three seats.
- Late positions include the cutoff and button, which act last.
The Importance of Position
In face-to-face poker, position affects the flow of the game. Players in late position can see how others act before making their own decisions, which is a natural part of the offline poker experience.
